Witness the Remarkable Growth in Passenger Traffic

In October 2024, KIA welcomed international passengers at 4.8 lakh, which is a 24.3% increase from the last year. This growth allowed it to surpass Chennai, which had 4.5 lakh, and Kochi, which had 4.1 lakh. This uptick in passenger numbers fits into a trend where the airport in Bengaluru has been steadily doing better. The airport spiked from 5th position with 4.39 lakh international passengers in September 2024.

Delhi and Mumbai lead the airports with check-in points of 17.50 lakh and 12.50 lakh international passengers respectively. However, this does not change anything; Bengaluru is steadily gaining status as a giant in international airports.

Strong Domestic Traffic and Overall Performance

Bengaluru’s KIA also performed well on the domestic front. In October, it handled 30.8 lakh domestic passengers, trailing behind only Delhi and Mumbai. The airport recorded a total of 35.7 lakh passengers in October by combining domestic and international traffic. This solid performance helped KIA secure its position as India’s third-busiest airport overall, not just internationally.

Expanding Global Reach

One of the main factors behind KIA’s growth is its widening network of international connections. Now, the airport caters to 29 international destinations through 34 airlines, which is very essential to such a growing passenger traffic. In the coming months, the airport will add more international routes. For example, IndiGo will commence direct flights to Mauritius on December 16. Simultaneously, will operate daily services to Langkawi, Malaysia. Akasa Air will launch direct services to Abu Dhabi.

The airport’s expansion of international connectivity is more than just an increase in destination. The airport also enhances the passenger experience. Its second terminal, which opened last year, has significantly improved the passenger experience. The completion of the second terminal in December 2019 has also played a crucial role in ensuring smoother operations,  as authorities commissioned it back in 2018.

Plans for the Future: A Second Airport for Bengaluru

As Bengaluru witnesses fast growth in air traffic, the city is thinking forward. The Karnataka Government proposes to build a new second airport to meet passengers in growing demand. Given the increasing air traffic around the region, a second airport will help manage passenger increases in the city for years to come.

Authorities also plan to use the HAL Airport for civil operations once its exclusivity agreement with KIA ends in May 2033. Authorities will have HAL Airport handle about 40 lakh passengers annually by 2047, reaching a peak capacity of 2,500 passengers per hour.

Infrastructural Upgrades Promoting Growth

Modern infrastructure is playing a key role in KIA’s success. The new Terminal 2, which opened last year, has improved the passenger experience. It offers more space better amenities and smoother check-in procedures. The second runway has also marked a turning point. Since the runways are parallel, KIA can now handle more flights and ensure quicker turnaround times, giving it an edge over other airports like Chennai and Kochi.

These infrastructure developments along with increasing international connections in the airport will ensure Bengaluru continues growing as a major global aviation hub. KIA’s outstanding performance is a testament to the rising status of the city on the world map.
